Appelé aussi téléphone mobile ou téléphone cellulaire, un téléphone portable est un téléphone utilisant les ondes radio (transmission radio-électrique par voie hertzienne) pour l’acheminement de la voix et autres données: SMS (short message service), courriel, internet, MMS (multimedia messaging service). La principale norme de transmission est la norme GSM (global system for mobile telecommunications), utilisée depuis 1992. Apparu en 2001, le smartphone est un téléphone portable doublé d’un PDA (personal digital assistant), complété fin 2002 par un écran couleur, un son polyphonique et une fonction appareil photo. Les téléphones portables de 3e génération (3G) apparaissent courant 2004, avec une vitesse accrue pour la transmission des données, ce qui permet la visiophonie, le téléchargement de musique et de vidéos, et l’utilisation des blogs et les chats. En février 2004, 1,3 milliard de personnes possèdent un téléphone portable. Les pays venant en tête sont la Chine, les Etats-Unis, l’Inde et l’Indonésie. 620 millions de téléphones portables sont vendus dans le monde en 2004, 780 millions en 2005 et un milliard en 2006.
